Mark Wilson believes Celtic’s transfer interest in the midfielder could signal a change in recruitment pattern

Celtic’s January priorities are already set by Brendan Rodgers as he looks to strengthen his ranks at Parkhead long-term.

The Irishman was able to open his checkbook and spend more than £30m on eight Bhoys summer signingsbut there’s always more work to do when perfecting a team.

In recent weeks, transfer stories have started to emerge regarding potential incomes. Brondby’s Mathias Kvistgaarden is back on Celtic’s shortlist following a superb start to life in his homeland this term.

Encouragingly, he is far from the only player to have been profiled by the gentlemen Scottish Premiership champions. Celtic have been quoted £4m to sign Lennon Miller while they closely follow his progress at Motherwell.

However, Mark Wilson believes that another reported target could represent a change in the recruitment pattern present under Brendan Rodgers.

Mark Wilson reacts to Celtic interest in Josh Brownhill

Earlier this week, 67 Hail exclusively disclosed Celtic are looking to sign Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhillwho is out of contract at Turf Moor next summer.

The 28-year-old will be available on a pre-contract in January and also has suitors in Italy and Saudi Arabia. Speaking further Clyde 1 SuperscoreboardWilson believes the pursuit could signal Bhoy is looking to refine his transfer strategy to balance potential with the “finish items” in the building.

He explained: “I don’t think we should cancel anything. I mean, I go back to Matt O’Riley, of a different age of course, but nobody really knew about him when he was coming in, £1.5m from the lower leagues in England and he ended up being a revelation.

“You turn him around quickly and he’s gone for what he was. Age wouldn’t really matter, would it? How old is Luke McCowan? Mid-twenties, so maybe Brendan Rodgers is focusing more on quality and I think he hinted at that a bit if he wanted to take Celtic to the next level.

“Brendan Rodgers can get away from the idea that every player has to be a project player for Celtic, who he can turn into a £20-25m player. I think that’s a good balance to strike, it’s a good balance to take part in some of these projects and give them an opportunity, but you need experienced professionals in a dressing room if you want your club to step up following.

“Somewhere along the line you have to have some finished articles. At 28, as a midfielder he can’t be far from that and probably in his prime, he would fit the mold. It is crowded, there are many players there

“Of course, Lennon Miller, that name never goes away and he also plays in that position and is at the opposite end of the scale, but it shows you, if true, that the model has been slightly altered from the manager looking to add more quality rather than projects.”

Josh Brownhill is in fine form for Burnley

Finding his shooting boots in the engine room, Brownhill has registered five goals and one assist in 16 appearances in all competitions this campaign, helping Burnley establish themselves in the promotion hunt.

The experienced midfielder has also created 15 chances and taken 27 touches in the box this season, per Fotmob, so he certainly has plenty to offer going forward, which would suit him well at Celtic.

Ultimately, it remains to be seen whether the Bhoys’ interest will evolve into something more, but the prospect Champions League football and a regular flow of silverware might prove tempting.
