St. On’, Schloegel make their cases a few days before the leak

HARRISON COUNTY, Miss. (WLOX) – People in 11 Mississippi counties will decide the next person on the bench as the 5th District Court of Appeals judge election is just days away.

Amy St. Pe’ and Jennifer Schloegel outlasted Ian Baker to reach the runoff.

“Being a judge for 14 years without a jury, you’ve seen how the process works, but it’s very different from a lawyer’s perspective,” St. Pe’, who is now Moss Point city attorney and municipal judge. to Gautier. “I think I’ll be able to add both.”

With over 50 years of legal experience between the candidates, both emphasized their track records as reasons for your vote.

“It’s a natural progression of my legal career,” said Schloegel, who is currently a chancery judge in Harrison, Hancock and Stone County. “I can take everything I’ve learned as a lawyer and then as a judge and bring that to the appellate court and serve more people across the state.”

While both candidates have extensive resumes, they feel some experiences set them apart.

For St. Pe’, are the different positions he held.

“I am the only candidate of the two remaining who has had an active litigation practice as well as judicial experience,” said St. On’. “That diverse perspective is what will make me the best candidate for the bench.”

Schloegel says her experience in the chancery court is a difference, not only from her opponent, but from all the other appeals court judges.

“70 percent of the appeals are civil, and the courts of chancery handle civil cases,” Schloegel said. “So you can see why it is important to have representation from the court of chancery,”

As voters prepare to return to the polls, both candidates have offered final words for the people of the 5th District.

“Last time, I was 7,000 people over my opponent,” said St. On’. “I’m asking those people to get out and make your initial vote count.”

“My intention is to fully serve the public and to serve every county in this district, but I’m actually going to serve the entire state,” Schloegel said.

The second round of the election is on Tuesday, November 26.
