Sadness in Durrow with the passing of Vera Fogarty

The communities of Durrow and beyond are mourning the loss of a much-loved and respected figure, Vera Fogarty, who passed away on Monday 18th November, surrounded by her family, at Abbeyleix Community Hospital. Predeceased by her devoted husband Jimmy and her brother Anthony, Vera’s legacy as a passionate advocate for youth sports and community spirit is fondly remembered by all who knew her.

Vera’s name is synonymous with The Harps GAAwhere its impact will be felt for generations to come. As a former juvenile secretary, Vera’s dedication to nurturing young talent was unparalleled. From the early days of the club, she played a crucial role in encouraging young people to participate in Gaelic games. Her tireless work with the juvenile committee has been instrumental in helping many young members reach their full potential, guided by Vera’s commitment to the club’s values.

Harps GAA described her as “an extraordinary administrator” who, alongside her late husband Jimmy, devoted countless hours to building a vibrant and inclusive club community. “Ní near go cur le chéile” — there is no strength without unity — aptly captures the spirit embodied by Vera in her work.

Her passion for promoting youth sports extended to Harps Camogie Clubwhich he co-founded and served as president. Vera’s love of camogie saw her travel far and wide, always there to support the teams in their ups and downs.

Club members recall his enthusiasm and unwavering encouragement both on and off the pitch, noting the vital role he played in the club’s development. They expressed their deep sorrow for the loss of their common founder, while offering sincere sympathies to Vera’s family.

Vera’s influence was not limited to the GAA. She and her late husband Jimmy were strong supporters of Cullohill Handball Club. Their passion for encouraging youth engagement led them to establish the Jimmy and Vera Fogarty Cup, a competition that continues to inspire young athletes to take up the sport. The club paid tribute to Vera’s legacy, recognizing her invaluable contributions and expressing their sincere condolences to her family.

Beyond her public roles, Vera was a devoted mother to Elizabeth, Marie, Patricia, Bridget, Jim and Ray and a cherished sister to Francis, Sarah and Anne. Her large family, which includes grandchildren and great-grandchildren, was at the center of her life. Her warmth, generosity and dedication to her family and community left an indelible mark on all who knew her. Vera’s passing is a deep loss, but her memory will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, neighbors and the many communities she touched.

Vera’s funeral took place on Thursday morning, November 21, in Holy Trinity Church, Durrow with interment in the adjoining cemetery.

May Vera Fogarty rest in peace as her legacy lives on through the lives she enriched and the sporting traditions she upheld. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dílis.
