A special court for hearing cases registered by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) has convicted four people, including a former vice-president of Samsung Electronics, South India, for defrauding an electronics dealer in Tirupati. They were sentenced to three years in prison.

In 2021, Hemanth Kumar, a resident of Mylapore, filed a police complaint against a Thiruvanmiyur-based firm called i2 Distribution; VL Narayan, former vice president of Samsung Electronics, South India; his wife Jyothi Narayan; Ilankumaran; Caroline Eucharist; and her husband Soundararajan alias V. Franco Soundararajan.

According to police, Hemanth Kumar, who ran a durable electronics business in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, allegedly had regular business interactions with Narayan. Hemanth Kumar claimed that when he wanted to move his business to Chennai in 2016, Narayan convinced him to invest in i2 Distribution, represented by three partners – namely Illankumaran, Jyothi Narayan and Caroline Eucharista. He signed a memorandum of understanding to invest an amount of ₹2.60 crore, entitled to an interest of 2% per month.

Since 2016, Hemanth Kumar has paid an amount of I2 2.60 crores to i2 Distribution. The others allegedly cheated him by giving post-dated cheques, which were dishonored.

Considering his complaint, the agency investigated the case and filed a charge sheet before the Special Court for CCB and CB-CID cases, Egmore.

After the trial, Special Court Metropolitan Magistrate A. Chellapandian found Narayan, Jyothi Narayan, Caroline Eucharista and Soundarajan guilty and sentenced them to three years in prison, in addition to imposing fines.

Earlier, the High Court had quashed the case against Ilankumaran.
