The judge reduced Proud Boy’s sentence by one year from January 6

A federal judge in Washington on Friday reduced a Proud Boy member’s prison sentence by a year for his role in the Jan. 6 riot on Capitol Hill, despite the man’s behavior during his sentencing.

Marc Bru, who was one of more than 1,500 protesters charged with crimes stemming from the riot, publicly berated Chief Justice James Boasberg during his sentencing in January. Bru called Boasberg a “clown” and a “fraud” and said she was running a “kangaroo court” at the time.

Boasberg sentenced Bru to five years in prison on Friday after dropping an obstruction charge because of a Supreme Court ruling that limited who could be charged with murder. for the Associated Press. Bru has served 15 months of his sentence so far.

The judge acknowledged Bru was not one of the most violent protesters, but claimed his behavior afterwards was “the worst I think I’ve seen from anybody.” Bru did not throw more insults at the judge during his sentencing.

“In my 22 years as a judge, I’ve never seen a defendant say the things he said at sentencing,” Boasberg said in court.

Bru was at the Capitol that day as a member of the extremist group Proud Boys and pushed a barricade against police officers. He later entered the Capitol complex and the Senate gallery. He was convicted of seven charges, including two felonies, for his role that day.
