Tottenham ‘desperate’ to thwart Man Utd comeback as star midfield move takes shape for January

Tottenham are planning a January deal for Angel Gomes before Manchester United land him, with top figures at the club “desperate” to see him signed instead of heading to a rival.

Gomes’ form and contract situation at Lille has sparked the interest of many clubs of late. The Englishman was handed a Three Lions debut and three subsequent games under Lee Carsley as a result of recent form.

His contract, which expires at the end of the season, suggests he won’t be a Lille player for long.

A native of Manchester United’s academy, the Red Devils have been linked with a move for him in the summer when he will be available for nothing.

However, according to GIVEMESPORTTottenham are considering making a bid for him in January, which would see Lille receive a small fee, rather than nothing, that they would receive in the summer.

Spurs’ willingness to spend money on a player they may not have to is due to senior figures including Ange Postecoglou being “desperate” to beat the likes of United and Newcastle to the transfer.

They are said to have “made inroads” in a bid to discover whether it would be possible to land Gomes for a small fee in January.

Postecoglou can defeat Amorim

The latest on United’s pursuit suggested the new boss Ruben Amorim gave the green light to the signing of Gomes.

Sporting director Dan Ashworth is apparently a fan of his and the new boss has no problem with him being added to the side.

As such, Spurs’ move in January would thwart one of Amorim’s first pieces of business.

But United are believed to only move for Gomes when he becomes a free agent, so there could be a chance Tottenham will come out on top.
