Nils Koppen ‘takes on far too much’ of Rangers job as technical director appointment raises concern

Nils Koppen has put a lot of work into his time at Rangers after becoming the club’s new technical director.

This is the sympathetic opinion of the former Rangers halfback Derek Ferguson who almost felt a little sorry for the Belgian, who was initially brought in as director of football recruitment.

Almost a year since joining the Ibrox giants, Koppen will now take on more responsibilities at the club, with Rangers confirming he will be in charge of the men’s academymedical and football operations, performance and analysis departments.

Ferguson thinks Köppen he is an asset to Rangers and has defended his work in Govan so far. But speaking on the Open Goal podcast, he fears Koppen will become overwhelmed with the extra responsibility.

Derek Ferguson expresses concern to Nils Koppen

Asked about Koppen’s appointment as technical director, Ferguson said: “Listen, I quite like the Koppen guy. He looks with his feet on the ground, grounded and thoughtful.

“He’s trying to do the right thing but I think he’s taking on far too much at a club like Rangers.

“Some of his signings were okay. It was a bit of a bummer that you always get with recruiting. But I watched it and listened to it a bit and that’s how you judge people.

“I went to him. He means well and you know he’s going to develop his back, but didn’t he just take too much? Of course, Rangers are a big club.

“He came in as head of recruiting, now he’s head of academy, he’s got something to do with the (department of) medical. It’s way too much.

“God, what will his sanity be like if it doesn’t go so well? I don’t know if that decision should have been made because there is no president, there is no chief executive.

“We have to do things right. It seems a bit, “oh, well, we’ve got it here, we’ll do it on the cheap.”

Ferguson’s brother Barry is advocating for Koppen’s promotion

Former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson felt that Koppen was the perfect fit for the role of technical director due to the Belgian’s enthusiasm for developing young players at the club.

Barry Ferguson wrote in Daily recording: “I understand the skepticism. Trust me, I fully understand why some Rangers fans have doubts about Nils Koppen’s promotion to the role of technical director at Ibrox.

“Let’s be honest, Koppen has a lot of people to gain, given that the big summer rebuild he oversaw didn’t quite work out the way supporters had hoped.

“But even so, there is something that excites me about Koppen’s new position. And that has everything to do with his views on the need for Rangers to produce their own young players and prepare them for the first team.

“If that’s going to be his main focus now that he’s been given more authority to take the club forward, let me tell you I’m all for it.”
