100 years ago

November 22, 1924: Klemm’s big birthday cake, which was displayed in shop windows until Thursday afternoon (November 20), weighed exactly 268 pounds. The weight guessing contest won prizes for the three closest guesses. First prize of $10 went to Walter Biggs of Normal, second prize of $5 to Mrs. Louise Everingham of Bloomington and third prize of $2.50 to Mrs. HS Wildman of Bloomington.

75 years ago

November 22, 1949: A kindergarten will probably be determined in Towanda, according to the Unit 5 District Board of Education. A signed petition requesting the preschool was presented to the board. A room could be obtained in the basement of the Towanda Methodist Church.

November 22, 1974: Spurred by potential gas shortages, rising vehicle maintenance costs and questionable air quality, the electric car does a quiet but timely comeback. Some of these economic and environmental issues gave Harold and Bette Dirks the impetus to form Dirks Elcar Sales in Lincoln.

November 22, 1999: This is the Peoria game he’s been looking forward to it for 63 years. The 17th ranked University of Illinois men’s basketball team will head west on I-74 to take on the Bradley Braves, who are favored to win the Missouri Valley Conference. The teams, who both won their opener last week, last met in Peoria on Dec. 30, 1936.
