Greenville County School Board Approves Laurens Road Tax District

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) – The Greenville County School Board passed a vote on the City of Greenville’s Laurens Road Redevelopment Plan.

At Tuesday’s meeting, the board voted 8-4. The Greenville City Council gave initial approval to the redevelopment plan of 14 Oct.

The Laurens Road Redevelopment Plan establishes a 223-acre tax increment financing district along the corridor from Haywood Road to Verdae Boulevard. The area has over 100 parcels of land, many of which are empty.

Officials said tax increment financing is used by cities and other municipalities to help encourage development in blighted or blighted areas.

More specific details of what the redevelopment plan will look like will come from you. The city said it will begin holding a series of opportunities for public input, and a public hearing and second vote will be held Dec. 9.

Councilor Wil Brasington, who represents the area, said workforce housing, streetscape and businesses are a start to what he would like to see.

The city will also create a financing plan for how it will help developers with infrastructure needs.
