Springfield Police Department Hosts Blue Light Ceremony to Honor Fallen Officers

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) – The Springfield Police Department is hosting its annual Project Blue Light ceremony Thursday, honoring the courage and sacrifice of fallen law enforcement officers.

This event serves as a heartfelt tribute to the police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty, remembering all of their bravery and the sacrifices made to keep the community safe.

The Blue Light Project ceremony will be held Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at Springfield Police Headquarters.

The ceremony will include remarks from Mayor Domenic Sarno and Police Superintendent Lawrence Akers, who will emphasize the importance of remembering these brave individuals, especially during the holidays.

The Blue Light Project first began in 1988 when a grieving mother-in-law decided to honor her loved ones by placing two blue lights in her window.

Today, this act of remembrance has evolved into a nationwide initiative, reflecting the nearly 15,000 families of fallen officers across the United States.

The blue lights symbolize hope and a commitment to never forget those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
