Kenyans mock Wandayi after Ruto cancels controversial Adani deal: ‘Very embarrassing’

Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has come under scrutiny after asserting the continuation of the KETRACO-Adani project despite Adani Energy Solutions chairman Gautam Adani facing KSh 32.5 billion fraud charges in the United States.

Addressing Parliament on Thursday, November 21, Wandayi assured lawmakers that the government conducted thorough due diligence before partnering with Adani Energy Solutions.

What did William Ruto say about the Adani deal?

The President instructed the relevant agencies to stop engagements with the company and pursue alternative reputable partners.

Ruto suggested that his landmark decision was informed by counsel from domestic and foreign investigative agencies that implicated Adani in malpractice.

“I now order – in continuation of the principles enshrined in Article 10 of the Constitution regarding transparency and accountability and based on the new information provided by our investigative agencies and partner countries – that the procurement agencies within the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Energy. and Petroleum immediately cancel the ongoing procurement process for the JKIA Expansion Public Private Partnership transaction, as well as the recently concluded KETRACO transmission line Public Private Partnership contract and immediately begin the process of integrating alternative partners,” the head of state said.

What did Kenyans say about Wandayi?

Kenyans were quick to recall Wandayi’s earlier statement following the President’s directive to cancel the Adani-KETRACO deal.

Some Kenyans were quick to speculate how Wandayi might have felt after the president reversed course on the deal.
