Appointment of technical director Nils Koppen raises question for pundit after ‘unimpressive’ recruitment

The appointment of Nils Koppen as Rangers technical director this week was met with skepticism by some sections of the support.

The Belgian has been on the door at Ibrox since last December as director of football recruitment.

His record has been consistent, with the likes of Hamza Igamane and Nedim Bajrami in particular showing flashes of talent, while Jefte has had some decent performances as well.

It was a somewhat unexpected move, however, with no chief executive in place, while a full-time chairman was also not brought in at the club, with John Gilligan still acting chairman.

So when the club announced Koppen’s promotion, there were questions. Koppen has answered some with his plans to sign Scottish talent as well as the explanation the difference between Koppen’s new role and his old one.

Now, those questions have been echoed further by pundit Andy Walker, who has not been convinced by the boss’s signings since arriving in Glasgow nearly a year ago.

The former Scotland and Motherwell striker believes Gers they proved their eagerness by announcing Koppen in his new role before the permanent leaders above the 39-year-old arrived.

This, for Walker, is a wake-up call as he ponders what the entire fan base might think of the club’s appeal and what it could mean for the future, including the January transfer window.

“I wonder what the Rangers fans think about it because their recent transfer business, in my view, has been unimpressive,” Walker told GO Radio.

“They signed players for a lot of money and you don’t really see a return on the pitch. You also paid a lot of money for players and let them go for very little.

“We’re on the brink of another transfer window, I can only imagine that Rangers have their eyes on a number of players, but then again, given the last set of accounts, they’ve been pretty alarming numbers, you wonder what they have to spend Rangers in this. window.

“There’s a lot of work there and I’ll say it again, I’ve always felt that Rangers have been too quick to make decisions, they’re very impatient.

Andy Walker was not impressed with Koppen’s record

“I don’t know who made that decision, I assume John Gilligan made that appointment, so they must have the authority to nail him and give him the opportunity to do the deal in a few months.”

Show host Paul Cooney reminded listeners that Köppen he is only 39 and has a long career ahead of him, but Walker chimed in: “It doesn’t matter if you’re young or old, what matters is the type of player, the value for money you bring.

“He’s been there for a while, I suppose he has a good understanding with Philippe Clement.

“It should be in tune. But recent business has been so unimpressive that I wonder what Rangers supporters think about this, do they support this appointment and think it will be a success?

Kris Boyd was livid with Rangers’ call to promote Koppen as he launched into a tirade about his lack of success in the transfer market.
