This story has been updated to include the official announcement of the transaction.

DeAndre Hopkins tenure with Tennessee Titans ended sooner than expected.

The Titans announced Thursday that they have traded their star wide receiver to the Kansas City Chiefs, ending the five-time Pro Bowler’s tenure with the team after just one and a half seasons. Hopkins caught 90 passes for 1,230 yards and eight touchdowns in 22 games with titaniumincluding a 1,057-yard season in 2023.

The Titans traded Hopkins for a fifth-round pick, which can conditionally become a fourth-round pick based on how Hopkins and the Chiefs perform the rest of the season. Hopkins is in the final year of his contract and will become a free agent again in 2025.

Hopkins signed a two-year contract with the Titans just before the start of training camp in 2023. He quickly emerged as the Titans’ No. 1 wide receiver. In 2024, the Titans surrounded Hopkins with more receiver talent, adding veterans Calvin Ridley and Tyler Boyd to play alongside Hopkins.

Hopkins missed most of 2024 training camp with a knee injury. The injury didn’t require surgery and didn’t cause Hopkins to miss any games, but his snaps dropped significantly in the early weeks of the season.

The Titans (1-4) have struggled in the passing game this season. Sophomore quarterback Will Levis continued to target Hopkins as the go-to option, throwing him 21 passes that led to 15 catches, 174 yards and a touchdown.

After Ridley and Boyd, the other Titans receivers on the active roster are veteran Nick Westbrook-Ikhine and rookie Jha’Quan Jackson. The Titans placed former first-round pick Treylon Burks on injured reserve last week.
