Lima teenager pleads not guilty to robbery that resulted in shooting death

Oct. 25 — LIMA — A Lima teenager recently pleaded not guilty in Allen County Common Pleas Court to five counts related to the February shooting death of 14-year-old Lauralye Sterling.

Cardarius Burns, who will turn 18 on Oct. 31, was charged with aggravated robbery with a firearm specification, felonious assault with a firearm specification, grand larceny when the property is a firearm or dangerous ordinance and two counts indictment for possession of weapons while under. handicap. He is currently being held in the Allen County Juvenile Detention Center on $250,000 bond.

The charges against Burns stem from an incident that occurred on Feb. 13 that resulted in Sterling’s death. Malik Dennis — who is accused of firing the shot that killed the teenager while inside a residence at 788 Greenlawn Ave. – was formally charged with aggravated murder and two counts of murder, each an unclassified felony, along with one count of felonious assault. improper discharge of a firearm in a dwelling and tampering with evidence.

At a municipal court hearing for Dennis, attorney Steve Chamberlain of the Allen County Public Defender’s Office said it was learned that Dennis had been robbed shortly before the shooting by two juveniles who were inside the Greenlawn Avenue residence. He apparently left and returned with the firearm that was used to shoot Sterling.

Burns would have been one of those minors.

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled in common pleas court for Nov. 4.
