A man wearing a Make America Great Again hat punched an election official in San Antonio, according to a sheriff’s report.

Early voting began Monday in Texas.

Police say on Thursday, Jesse Lutzenberger, 63, walked into a polling station wearing a MAGA hat in support of the former president. Donald Trump. A 69-year-old poll worker asked him to remove his hat because, under Texas law, political messages at polling stations are considered illegal election actions. The worker asked Lutzenberg to remove his hat, and the voter complied. However, Lutzenberger put his hat back on and the worker approached him and began to accompany him.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said Lutzenberger was then caught on surveillance camera “throwing (throwing) an arm back at the victim.”

“The victim appeared to be walking away from the suspect,” Salazar said. “At that point, the suspect turned around and threw several punches directly in the face of the victim.”

The election worker’s injuries were not life-threatening, and he was treated at the scene by emergency medical personnel.

Lutzenberger was arrested at his home and released Friday on $30,000 bond.

Bexar County Police responded to several calls regarding individuals wearing political clothing and supporting various candidates. Texas law states that political clothing is prohibited within 100 yards of polling places.

According to a Bexar County election official, more than 200,000 voters have cast ballots so far.
