25 arrests for Surrey mall thefts in one-day ‘Boost and Bust’ spree

Police recovered more than $6,500 in stolen merchandise, including clothing, sunglasses and perfume

Surrey Mounties say 25 people have been arrested for shoplifting during a day-long ‘Boost and Bust’ in Guildford Town Centre.

The month-long operation, October 21, involved Surrey RCMP North Community Response Unit (CRU), Delta Police Patrol Support Team (PST), security and loss prevention staff at nine retail stores in Surrey’s largest mall.

Police recovered more than $6,500 in stolen merchandise, including clothing, sunglasses and perfume, executed three warrants and arrested one person for violating probation, according to a Surrey RCMP press release issued on Friday, October 25. Three weapons (knives and pepper spray) were seized.

Recommended charges include theft under $5,000, possession of ID and failure to comply with probation.

“We will continue to ensure our retail spaces in Surrey are safe to work, visit and shop,” said RCMP Sgt. Nigel Pronger.

“As the busy holiday shopping season approaches, police will have a strong presence in and around our shopping centers, both in uniform and undercover operations. Those who choose to commit crimes face a real risk of arrest and the subsequent legal consequences of their actions.”

The anti-theft operation “highlights the importance of collaboration between law enforcement, retailers and security personnel in addressing shoplifting and keeping the community safe,” according to a Delta Police press release, and “demonstrates the value of the partnership between the Delta Police Department and our Surrey Police partners, together we are increasing our effectiveness to reduce crime in our communities.
