Super Mario 64’s blindfolded speedrunner sets a new world record in a disastrous attempt where he dies 7 times and declares “this race sucks”

Bubzia, the blindfolded speedrunning specialist, is grinding out a new category in Super Mario 64. Earlier this week, he set off on a run that immediately turned into a disaster, filled with deaths, missed tricks and bad jumps. It turned out to be a new world record.

In early October, Bubzia completed a 118-day trial for a new world record in the category of 16 stars blindfolded with a Sub-20 minute world record that the community once thought was “completely impossible”. His new goal is a new world record in the blindfolded 70-star category, and to train for it, he has his first attempts at grinding in the 31-star category. Almost all 31-star tricks are 70-star, so attempting world records in the shorter category is a perfect way to practice the new tricks and routes that will be essential to the bigger goal.

This week, a 31-star attempt got off to a terrible start with a missed clip at the first level that forced Bubzia to use a backup strategy. “I’d usually reset here if we were going for the world record,” he said. “I don’t want to waste time on resets when we can practice so many stars on the fly.” About eight minutes into the run, he lost track of his position in the game under the blindfold. He was able to find a door to regain his bearings, but noted that “this is a race reset” under normal circumstances.

When she flew off a cliff carrying a baby penguin on the Cool, Cool Mountain course, Bubzia could only shake her head and say, “I give up. Honestly, fuck this star so much. It’s ridiculous at this point. .” He died again a few minutes later when he forgot to set the correct camera angle. Then he died again – and again. Finally, he suffered a full game, requiring him to run to the end from the starting area. He ended up dying four times in Lethal Lava Land before finally claiming the prize. “That was basically the first try, if you think about it,” he joked he.

After once again forgetting to set the correct camera mode 27 minutes into the trial, Bubzia declared, “Ugh, this race sucks, man.” A few minutes later, he made a decent run through a piece of the Hazy Maze Cave, remarking that “that was really clean – a really, really clean star.” But he lost his position again just before grabbing the star itself. “I lied. I liedman okay? I lied, man. Where’s the star?” He still managed to get the star after a few seconds of trial and error, but it served as “proof that I’m blindfolded, right there.”

As the trial reached its final stages, Bubzia said “I can’t wait until we get good runs again”, and that was the tone of the last few minutes of the video. But by this point it was starting to become clear to the Twitch chat – who obviously weren’t blindfolded as they watched the time splits against Bubzia’s previous efforts – that this race was somehow in a world record pace. The new tricks and routing were enough to overcome all the setbacks along the way.

“Imagine having to carry that mess as a WR,” joked one commentator as the end of the game neared. But that’s exactly what happened. Bubzia caught the last star, raised her blindfold and stared in utter disbelief as she saw her last. “Is it a world record? God, this is a joke. World record by five seconds. God what the hell Man, this run sucks. I’m not saying this to make the speedrun meme. It’s literally stupid, he said, laughing all the while. “But hey, GGs, I guess! Yes!”

So yes, Bubzia’s 39:12 completion of the 31-star category is currently a world record – although given all the obvious room for improvement and Bubzia’s continued efforts in the category, it probably won’t stand much more. His goal is to reach about 35 minutes before moving on to the next category.

Bubzia’s current cursed palmar is in good company until it is replaced, at least. Super Mario 64 speedruns are full of triumphant mishaps such as “The cringest world record of all time” set in 2023or single-level record that was set earlier this year, seconds after the runner called his effort “relentless.” You’ve got to get your W’s where you can get them, folks.
