At least 75 sickened as deadly McDonald’s E. coli outbreak spreads

A deadly outbreak of E. coli poisoning linked to McDonald’s Quarter Pounders has spread, sickening at least 75 people in 13 states, federal health officials said Friday.

Twenty-two people were hospitalized, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. Two people developed a dangerous complication of kidney disease, and one person died.

No source of the outbreak has been identified, US Food and Drug Administration officials said. But the investigators focused on the sliced onions used in the burgers, as well as the beef patties.

McDonald’s officials said a California produce grower, Taylor Farms, supplied yellow onions that were recalled for possible E. coli contamination. McDonald’s pulled the burger from menus in several states on Tuesday when the outbreak was announced.
