Dominican and Haitian New Yorkers Condemn DR’s Mass Deportation of Haitians

Here in New York, a group of protesters gathered outside the Dominican consulate in the Bronx on Thursday to denounce the mass deportations of Haitians by the Dominican Republic. Earlier this month, Dominican President Luis Abinader announced a campaign to deport up to 10,000 Haitians a week, citing an “excess” of immigrants. Over the past three weeks, more than 27,000 people have been deported to Haiti. This is Dr. Saudi Garcia.

Dr. Saudi Garcia: “We say no more about mass deportations. We say no more about anti-Haitian violence, centuries of anti-Haitian violence. We say no more to allow our own rights to be violated so we can push someone else down. This is not how we build a better Dominican Republic.”

The expulsions come as the UN says more than 10,000 Haitians have been internally displaced in the past week after fleeing gang attacks around the capital Port-au-Prince.
