A Fort Wayne woman was the third person sentenced in 2023 in a fatal shooting

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – A Fort Wayne woman was sentenced Friday to 13 years in prison. She was the third defendant convicted in the case.

Lexus Evans was one of four people charged with murder in connection with the fatal shooting of Dennis Dwayne Starr, 40, last July. Starr was found dead from gunshot wounds after crashing his car near the intersection of Lower Huntington Road and Kruge Drive.

She pleaded guilty to aggravated assault under a plea deal that carried a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison. Instead, the murder charge against her was dropped.

Lexus Evans was charged along with her father, Samuel Evans III, her brother, Samuel Evans IV, and her brother’s friend, Jesse Shears.

Last week, Samuel Evans III was sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to battery. Shears was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to aggravated assault.

Both men had murder charges dropped as part of their pleas.

Samuel Evans IV pleaded guilty to murder in the case. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 2, when his sentence will be up to Allen Superior Court Judge David Zent.
