Court orders arrest of prominent businessman Chavda for violating bail conditions

Dar es Salaam. The Kisutu Resident Court has issued an arrest warrant for prominent businessman Pravinchandra Chavda (75) after he failed to honor bail conditions in his case of providing false information to the Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police.

The court also summoned the sureties of the accused to explain why they did not bring the accused to court.

Mr Chavda, a resident of Upanga in Dar es Salaam, faces four charges, including providing false information to Dar es Salaam Central Police Station in an attempt to obtain a police report for the alleged loss of five property titles on the ground.

He is accused of fraudulently using the said report to acquire the said lands. The court’s Senior Magistrate, Aaron Lyamuya, made the decision on Friday, November 22, 2024, after the defendant failed to appear in court without notice.

In another development, his sureties failed to appear in court to provide details of the whereabouts of the accused.

The prosecutor’s office asked the court to serve the defendant with an arrest warrant after violating the bail conditions.

Speaking in court, Senior State Prosecutor Grace Mwanga said the case was adjourned pending review of the proceedings, which was referred to the High Court for assessment and adjudication.

“However, I have not seen the accused in court nor his sureties. I have no information about their whereabouts; therefore, I request the court to issue a warrant of arrest,” said Senior State Prosecutor Mwanga.

She also asked the court to issue a summons to Chavda’s sureties to explain why they failed to bring their client to court or provide information about his whereabouts.

Magistrate Lyamuya agreed with the Prosecution and issued the arrest warrant for the accused and a summons for the sureties.

He then adjourned the case to December 17, 2024, when it will be mentioned. The defendant is accused of fraudulently obtaining plot number 1814 situated in the Msasani Peninsula in Dar es Salaam, an offense which is alleged to have been committed on 10 January 2022.

He allegedly filed a land transfer document with the Registrar of Titles, claiming to be the CEO of the One Investment Company that owns the land, while he knew the deed was fake.

On October 7, 2019, at the Dar es Salaam Special Area Police Station, Mr. Chavda is accused of providing false information regarding the loss of five land titles with intent to obtain fraudulent reports of the missing titles when he knew that the information is false.

The defendant is also alleged to have forged a document called a ‘Board Resolution’, trying to pass it off as genuine and issued by a director of Point Investment Limited, the land owner, knowing at the same time that it was not true.

It is further alleged that on January 10, 2022, in Dar es Salaam, he presented the false document to the Registrar of Titles, claiming to have purchased plot number 1814 in Msasani Peninsula in Dar es Salaam.
