Self-reporting from the Phoenix Police Department shows 2024 robberies and aggravated assaults surpassing last year’s numbers, despite data representing only nine months this year.

Focusing on homicides, rapes, robberies and aggravated assaults, the figures were compiled and indexed by the Major Cities Chiefs Association, an organization of police chiefs from the largest cities in the US and Canada. Figures from the entire year 2023 were used to compare those from January to September 2024. The figures were drawn from violent crimes reported to the FBI and were classified according to the federal crime reporting agency’s uniform classification.

Robbery cases in Phoenix in 2024 were 2,275 — up 200 from the 2,075 reported in 2023. Aggravated assault cases in Phoenix reached 6,831 in 2023, while the 2023 total was 6,742.

Arizona’s other two major cities saw a similar trend.

“Crime across the country fluctuates from month to month and year to year. The Phoenix Police Department is committed to working with our community partners to not only prevent crime, but also to solve the criminal acts that occur in our communities,” Phoenix Police said in a statement. .

Tucson robbery cases for the first nine months of the year were rated at 598, reflecting an increase of 25 over last year. The southern Arizona city is surpassing aggravated assault cases this year over last year, as there were 1,897 in 2024 in September and 1,716 was the total in 2023.

Arizona’s third-largest city, Mesa, saw aggravated assault cases in 2024 reach 1,493, up from 1,351 in 2023.

Homicides and rapes in Phoenix between the reporting period for 2024 were 107 and 810, respectively. These figures represent 17 and 34 fewer homicides and rapes, respectively, than in 2023. The number of cases may likely increase for this year and even exceeds what was reported last year.
