The I-80 basketball rivalry is scheduled for Friday between Nebraska Cornhuskers and Creighton Blue Jays. The Huskers will make the trip to Omaha hoping to pull off an upset against their nemesis.

The two sides have met in every season dating back to 1977. The 2024 edition will mark the 58th meeting of all time. Nebraska head coach Fred Hoiberg previewed that game coming up this week.

In doing so, he cast some shadow Blue Jays fan base! He questioned their loyalty in his latest press conference.

“The weird thing about this rivalry is, the next day, a lot of those (Creighton) fans will be cheering for Nebraska on the football field.” – Fred Hoiberg

The term “Jayskers” is used to describe those who support Creighton basketball (and other sports) throughout the week, but Nebraska football on Saturdays. The dual affiliation comes because of the Blue Jays’ lack of a football program.

This concept is nothing new to college sports. There are many fans across the nation who boast an affinity for a smaller school, perhaps an alma mater, while choosing to root for a bigger gridiron program. I see if frequently in my hometown of Charleston, SC.

Those who attended the College of Charleston often choose between South Carolina or Clemson because the Cougars do not have a football team. One thing makes the situation a little different here. The two schools are far from fierce rivals!

Sure, when the Cougars get upset, there will be smack talk, but these meetings are not annual and there is a respect between the programs. Not the case in Nebraska!

“Our problem with the Jayskers it is not that he cheers for Creighton sports and Husker football. It’s the fact that they cheer for Creighton sports and Husker football and talk endless trash about all the other Husker sports.”

Creighton lives to win Cornhuskerssomething they have done in 12 of their last 15 head-to-head fights. They will look to do so again on Friday. Many will then return and cheer on Nebraska the next day when it faces Wisconsin at Memorial Stadium. Makes Fred Hoiberg scratch his head.

Blue Jays fans will be rooting for a win on Friday. Then they’ll put their Nebraska hate aside for three hours on Saturday. It’s a confusing twist in a massive rivalry. You won’t see that anywhere but college sports!
