The train company begins the recruitment drive for apprentices

A train company has launched a recruitment drive to hire new apprentice engineers.

Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR), which operates the Thameslink, Great Northern, Southern and Gatwick Express, has said it wants to recruit people and teach them how to maintain its fleet of trains.

The course is a mix of practical learning and theory leading to a UK recognized trade qualification.

Anyone over 16 can apply but must have a minimum of a Level 4 (Grade C) GCSE in Maths, English and Science to be eligible for the role.

Katie Short joined GTR in 2023 and says she hopes to qualify as a Level 1 Service Engineer.

The 22-year-old said: “I’ve always loved hands-on, hands-on jobs, so I wanted to take that passion and apply it to an industry where I could create a long-lasting career.

“I wanted to make a difference and be part of a team that helps keep our trains running safely, so I applied for an apprenticeship and haven’t looked back since.”

Cameron Wytiahlowsky, Apprentice Engineering Trainer Assessor at GTR, said: “We are looking to recruit the next generation of engineers who are ready to take their first steps on the career ladder.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to earn a real wage while learning the trade.”

Applicants must be able to travel to East Surrey College and various locations on the GTR network for work, the train company said.
