Brewers infielder predicted he’ll leave Milwaukee to pursue million-plus deal

The Milwaukee Brewers anticipate needing a replacement at shortstop for the 2025 campaign if Willy Adames leaves, but another infield spot could also be open.

The Brewers may have to find a replacement for a slugger who could look for a home elsewhereif he thinks he can get a bigger deal.

“Hoskins signed a two-year, $34 million contract with Milwaukee last winter and can opt out after this season.” The Athletic’s Jim Bowden wrote Thursday morning. “He’ll have to sign another short-term contract to try to rebuild his value. Top teams: Brewers, Mariners, Twins.”

Hoskins hit .214 with 40 extra-base hits, including 26 homers, 82 RBI and a .722 OPS (98 OPS+) in 131 games this season.

Although Milwaukee has been listed as a fit, Hoskins is unlikely to opt out of his contract pending a bigger deal with the Brewers. The 31-year-old has had a down year, albeit in his first season after suffering a torn ACL, but would be wise to accept his current deal if he wants to stay put.

If the first baseman thinks he can get more money, he’d likely have a better shot at getting it from another organization — but a raise isn’t guaranteed in the free agent market.
