The mobile jury acquits the man of theft, suspends him on the charge of rape

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – A Mobile County jury acquitted a Talladega County man of burglary but failed to reach an agreement on the related rape charge.

The Mobile County District Attorney’s Office said no decision has been made on whether to retry Taquon Wells on the rape charge.

Prosecutors said Wells broke into a young woman’s apartment near the University of South Alabama on Halloween 2021.

The incident sparked a lawsuit by the victim against the owners of her apartment complex, One Ten Student Living. The pending lawsuit accuses the defendants of “running a playground for predators” and failing to provide adequate security.

The owners of the apartment complex have denied wrongdoing.
