Man charged with federal charges after allegedly shooting Nashville police officers

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – A man has been charged federally after allegedly shooting officers Tuesday, according to the Metro Nashville Police Department.

The incident happened early Tuesday morning after officers responded to the 700 block of Lewis Street for a report of a man trying to break into a woman’s home.

Before the shooting, officers saw Knykholas Lane, 21, of Nashville, attempting a possible burglary and carrying a gun. Officers ordered him to stop, but he ran, police said.

Police said Lane pointed the gun at the officers and fired. The officers then returned fire, hitting Lane twice.

MNPD said it recovered the weapon Lane fired at the officers, a Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun.

Lane was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries. He was booked into the Metro Jail Tuesday morning on an aggravated assault against an officer charge.

He also had outstanding warrants for his arrest on charges of domestic assault and false imprisonment.

Police said Lane was on probation for a two-felony burglary conviction when this incident occurred.

“If convicted of today’s charge, Lane faces up to 15 years in federal prison,” MNPD said.
