DC man sentenced to 20 years in prison for armed carjacking and robbery

WASHINGTON — A 22-year-old Washington, D.C. man was sentenced Friday to 20 years in prison for an armed carjacking and a separate armed robbery in 2022, according to U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Police Chief Metropolitan Pamela A. Smith.

Deangelo Richardson pleaded guilty in August 2024 to one count of armed carjacking and one count of armed robbery in District of Columbia Superior Court. Judge Erik Christian imposed the sentence, which includes five years of supervised release after his prison term.

Prosecutors said the carjacking occurred on July 14, 2022, when Richardson and two masked accomplices, all armed, committed a series of violent murders in Northeast DC. After threatening her at gunpoint, they stole her car, phone and credit cards, which Richardson later used at local businesses.

Richardson’s armed robbery occurred on November 26, 2022, in the 1300 block of South Carolina Avenue SE. Authorities said Richardson parked his car in front of a couple walking their dog, then jumped out with a gun and stole the husband’s phone. He was arrested later that night following a police chase.

The case was investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department’s Carjacking Task Force and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregory Evans and former Assistant U.S. Attorney Omeed Assefi.

Richardson’s conviction highlights ongoing efforts to combat gun violence and carjacking in the District.
